A Delicious Journey of Community Love from Scratch

When I stumbled upon SweetArt Cafe in my Google search, I felt an irresistible urge to visit it. Located in St. Louis, SweetArt is a charming, from scratch vegan bakery and cafe. What’s remarkable is that this cafe endured the pandemic and thrived, remaining a neighborhood staple for the past 15 years. The cafe offers something for everyone. Whether you’re a dedicated vegan, a meat enthusiast, a lover of all things sweet, or a caffeine addict, SweetArt provides a welcoming haven. Nestled in the Shaw neighborhood, it’s conveniently near iconic attractions like the Missouri Botanical Garden, Tower Grove Park, and the farmers’ market.

SweetArt Cafe’s 15-Year Evolution

For the past 15 years, Reine Reis, the owner, and her dedicated crew have served the neighborhood. The cafe welcomes you for lunch, brunch, and dinner (see hours below), offering a diverse menu that includes burgers, fried chicken, salads, and tacos. However, meat dishes are not the only highlight; you’ll find an array of enticing options such as fried cauliflower, coconut curry chickpea, kale, and bean dishes too.

Vegan Cafe in Saint Louis

Today, we decided to indulge in both worlds. Our order included the mouthwatering fried Buffalo chicken and the delectable fried cauliflower tacos. We adored both dishes for their abundance of ingredients and rich flavors. While I thoroughly enjoyed both choices, the presence of a healthier vegetable option was a welcomed surprise, and it seems the neighborhood agrees.

During our visit, we observed a diverse crowd, ranging from people in suits to those in comfortable sweats, all entering the cafe. Many patrons left with a dozen or more cupcakes; without exception, everyone departed with a beaming smile.

Cafe Hopping in St. Louis

Today, we planned to explore several cafes, so we focused on the savory offerings at SweetArt. Looking back, we realized we should have also indulged in something sweet, as the dessert options we encountered later didn’t quite measure up. So, consider my advice and savor both sides of the menu. While SweetArt’s desserts are undeniably delicious, Reine and I can attest that the gooey butter bars at Park Avenue Cafe, located at 6th and Olive downtown, are truly exceptional. Park Avenue is a roaster and the cafe provides beans to many other area coffee shops. It didn’t surprise me that Reine recognizes the value of supporting other businesses in her city.

Cafe’s Afrocentric Decor

Although the cafe’s Afrocentric decor is a testament to its roots, Chef Reis notes that the neighborhood has evolved over its 15-year journey. It has transitioned from a predominantly Black clientele to a diverse mix of customers. The captivating decor initially drew me in, and meeting Reine was the proverbial “icing on the cake.” I’ll never forget her response when I asked if she was the owner. She chuckled and replied, ‘The cafe owns me.’ I genuinely understand that sentiment. You can tell that the cafe is a labor of love– for the food and the community.

I also loved all the words of wisdom, love, and inspiration scattered throughout the cafe. They contribute to fostering a positive and communal atmosphere within the cafe. Every little bit helps, right?

Love + Magic Kitchen

Like its owner and one of the staff members, Ashley, the cafe is committed to actively improving its community. Their enthusiasm, radiant smiles, and open hearts made me feel welcome in an unfamiliar setting, leaving an enduring sense of inspiration. Click the link to order Reina’s e-book called “Love + Magic Kitchen.” “Discover her downloadable recipe book of mouthwatering plant-based recipes, invaluable tips, and cooking inspiration. I think this book is perfect for curious minds exploring the world of yummy meatless meals.

Sweet Art and Community

The cafe also serves several cupcakes, cookies, and cakes. Completing the Cake Order Form does not guarantee an order until we receive payment at least 72 hours in advance. SweetArt’s plant-based cakes, suitable for any occasion, are handcrafted with signature designs – custom decorations are unavailable. Customers can expect stunning, elegant, and delicious cakes with one of SweetArt’s original creations. However, this doesn’t imply that customers won’t receive a delectable cake tailored to their occasion. SweetArt allows patrons to choose from various cake sizes, fillings, buttercreams, and flavors for a personalized experience.

Steven and I were overjoyed to discover SweetArt, and we sincerely hope you can also experience it. Reine and her staff, with a special shoutout to you, Ashley, are truly delightful and a valuable asset to the community. Remember, the size of our community is defined by our willingness to explore and connect. So, whether it’s a road trip, a flight, a train journey, or a simple car ride, venture out and discover the sweet art waiting to be explored.
